bISHOP PHILIP NORTH - SHEFFIELD
The EGGS Committee are saddened to hear of the withdrawal of Philip North from his nomination to the See of Sheffield. Bishop Philip is a respected bishop with a commitment to evangelism that has often focused on the poor and marginalised in our communities. His withdrawal causes us to have concern as to whether the mutual flourishing that we believed had been accepted across the church is now undermined, and whether some evangelicals will conclude that their own future welcome in the C of E is less secure. We commend to members the gracious statement made by Forward in Faith (see here) and invite members to pray for Bishop Philip, the Diocese of Sheffield and our Archbishops as they lead us forward at this time.
The report from the House of Bishops (GS 2055) on marriage and same-sex relationships was discussed by General Synod in a 'Take Note' debate on Wednesday 15th February.
242 members voted to 'take note', with 184 against, and 6 abstentions.
However, the report needed a majority in all three Synodical Houses to 'take note', which it failed to achieve in the House of Clergy.
The House of Bishops voted 43 in favour and 1 (mistakenly) against.
The House of Clergy voted 93 in favour and 100 against with 2 abstentions.
The House of Laity voted 106 in favour and 83 against with 4 abstentions.
The EGGS Committee have issued a statement following this result, which can be read here.
The report itself (GS 2055) can be read in full here.
